April Budget Review

I'm not a regular grocery shopper. I buy stuff before I even need it, matching manufacturer coupons with store sales. This way I'm able to "shop" from my own pantry and pay a fraction of retail with items I use. No, we will not use all those mandarin oranges this month, but we will use it this year. When I make meals for us, I menu plan around what we already have on our shelves and in the freezer. There are occasional items I have to pay full price for, but they are the exception as I build up my food storage with stuff we actually use, all for less then I used to spend just to get us by every month.

Retails: $639.01
Total Spent: $205.87
Percent Off: 68%

This month I was able to stock up on lotion, deodorant, maxi pads, fabric softener, dryer sheets, toothbrushes, salsa, diapers, wipes, rice, vegetable oil, cereal, canned veggies, canned fruit, syrup, dough enhancer, flour, chicken broth, beef roasts, paper towels, cough drops, 7-Up, soap, foil, dog treats, cream of chicken soup, ice cream, granola bars, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, Easter treats, eggs, frozen veggies, canned dog food, butter, spices, air fresheners, sugar

Baskin Robbins $.31 ice cream!

It's back! Baskin Robbins' annual $.31 scoop night is tonight from 5-10pm. Delicious.

If I remember right, last year there was a limit of 3 scoops per person. The weather is crummy around here, so maybe our lines will be shorter? Last year the line wrapped around the building, but there was a fun, party atmosphere and it moved decently fast.

See you tonight!

Party Favors/ Prizes

I bought these eggs this morning at Rite Aid and just had to tell you how great they are.

They are being clearanced out with the Easter stuff at 90% right now. They retail for $2.99, so are 29 cents for a pack of 8!

Each egg has a little baggy with 4 jelly beans inside, perfect for little ones.

At the Provo Rite Aid they had these balls, dinosaur heads, and a Dora/Diego/Sponge Bob medley. My mom said her Rite Aid in Washington had butterfly ones.

These totally don't look Easter-y to me at all. They would make a great party favor or prize for some lucky little ones. I'm using them to help potty train. 5 stickers = a treat!

rite aid

I'm SO overbudget. I've been really thinking about why and I remembered that case lot sales were this month. In the fall I think I might allot myself like $30 more dollars for the case lots. That would help. It wouldn't have been enough this month though. Yikes.

I went to Rite Aid today just for the Aveeno. That stuff is so good but it is priced like gold.

Retails: $43.03
Total Spent: $7.08
Percent Off: 84%
plus I will be getting a $3 Rebate, so factoring that in,
Total Spent: $4.08

Stayfree pads, reg. $3.99
- on sale $1.99

- FREE!

Lady Speedstick, reg. $3.99
- on sale $2.99
- used $2 in-ad coupon

- $.49
(I totally do not need deodorant but needed more filler to get my total to be $25. It actually cost me less to buy this than not)

Dinosaur/Ball Eggs, reg. $2.99
- $.29 each, all Easter stuff is 90% off
(I bought these to help with potty training. I showed them to Sam and his diaper was off, ready to use the toilet before I even finished explaining it to him. It was so funny!)

Heads up: Buy Low is doing a funny thing these days. They have a regular ad that looks like this that comes in the mail with all the other ads either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The same day they are also sending out this flier that has more sales that aren't in the 1st ad and have some spectacular store coupons attached. You can't get the coupon price without the coupon and you can't get the coupons in the store. I found out that one a few weeks ago, darn it all.

Goodbye Canned Beans...

...and Hello Flavor!

My sister-in-law Alicia shared the wonder that is dried beans with me a few years ago and since then I have a hard time eating canned. There is no magical, mystical secret; you just add seasonings while they cook and mmmmm. Delicious. The great thing is that they taste better and are cheaper, my perfect combo.

This is how I cook dried black beans, but feel free to try it with beans of your choice. Also, I use a big crockpot so I'm able to cook 2 lbs at a time. If you have a smaller one, only do 1 lb.

Incidentally, I LOVE cooking beans in the crockpot. It is so easy. I don't have to watch it or stir it at all. The hardest part about this is cleaning out the crockpot at the end. Nice!

Delicious Black Beans

Ingredients: dried black beans, chicken bullion (5-6 cubes), 1/2 a chopped onion (or onion powder), couple cloves of minced garlic (or garlic powder)

Super Complicated:
  1. throw 2 lbs of beans into a colander and rinse them.
  2. put them in the crockpot and add a bunch of water, enough to cover the beans and then more. Basically, there's the layer of beans and then an equal layer of water.
  3. throw in some chicken bullion, chopped onion and minced garlic (or powders) and turn that crockpot on high for about 6 hours or so. (do you like how exact this is?) Oh, don't add salt. The bullion is salty enough. Found that one out the hard way...
  4. Towards the end of cooking, if the beans are still a bit hard or if they're getting tacky/sticky/dry I'll pour in some more water. Let them cook until they are soft and yummy.
No need to drain these- you want a bit of that flavorful sauce in with the beans.

These are perfect for tacos, burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, or as a side.

What in the World Do I Do with All These Beans?!!

Now you have a ton of beans. What to do?

I partially fill gallon freezer baggies with these, squeeze all the air out, and freeze them flat. Then when I need beans I just break off a hunk and warm it up in the microwave.

Free Plants!

Spring Hill Nursery has a killer deal right now: Get $20 FREE! All you'll have to pay is shipping which starts at $7.95. For $20 in stuff the shipping was $9.95.

Hip2save also reminded me to go through ShopAtHome.com, where I'll get 12% of my purchase back. Just click on this link, type "Spring Hill Nursery" in the search box, and follow their link.

I got the Mixed Daylilies, above, that are on the One Cent Sale, meaning I doubled my order of them for $.01. I also got some really pretty other flowers that I can't remember what they are.

Dairy Queen Blizzards

Just making sure you all know about the Dairy Queen Blizzard deal going on this week (april 19-25): Buy one, get one for a quarter. No coupon required and apparently all Dairy Queens are participating.

Oh good. I thought I was going to go a whole day without any type of treat.

Breadtwists: can you say "Delicious?!"

Oh boy, this is not a good discovery if you're on a diet. Or if you would rather not gain 25 pounds. Either way, this is bad.

these are mine. mmmmm.

I made these breadtwists last night and am loving how good these were.

Ease of Preparation: A
- These are so fast! There's a 10 minute rest/rise and then a 15-20 minute rise after they're formed. They cook for about 20 minutes (mine were done at about 17). They take under an hour from start to finish!
- UPDATE: my sister made these last night and was so hungry she skipped the 2nd rise completely. She said they turned out great! Good to know.
- The recipe isn't specific about how much butter, garlic, or salt to use. I just eyeballed it and it turned out great. After I rolled out the dough I think I used 3 T of butter and one bigger garlic clove. When the breadsticks were all cooked I used about another 2 T of butter but didn't add any garlic. I didn't want to spread raw garlic on them, but I think next time I'll throw in a bit of garlic powder. We love garlic around here.

Taste: A+
- They tasted pretty similar to the Pizza Factory breadtwists. Good thing because that's the only thing I really like at that restaurant. Now we can make them at home for WAY cheaper.
- Why have I never thought to roll out bread, slather it with butter, garlic, and salt, fold and cut it? This is genius.

Overall: A+ (both Matt and me)
- I have found a new best friend.

I have some good news. I got an email from Rite Aid saying they've mailed my $27 rebate. Good thing because I bought diapers this morning. I've got that darn check spent before I even get it! Nice money-management.

chuck e cheese

We went to Chuck E. Cheese tonight to show my 2 year old how fun it is so we can use it as a reward to bribe him to get out of diapers. I'm crossing my fingers that it works.

I'm telling you this because we got a killer deal! We ordered a CityDeals gift certificate a few weeks back. I paid $10 for a $20 gift certificate. We used that tonight along with the coupon that came in the 2/21 SS newspaper that was $21.99 for a package deal.

We ended up paying $13 for a large pizza, sodas, and 30 tokens. It would have cost $30 full price.

I'm telling you this for 2 reasons:
1. to brag
2. to tell you that CityDeals has free shipping right now PLUS 15% off when you enter the code SPRINGCLEANING at checkout.

They have certificates for food and activities. I've LOVED the ones I've gotten. Check them out!

target

I know I'm over budget. I know, I know, I know. But I also know that my Rite Aid check for $27 plus a $10 gift card are both on their way. Sometime.

I just cannot keep on top of wipes here. And I'm a compulsive shopper.

We were at Chuck E. Cheese, right next door to Target, and I thought I'd pop in really quick while my husband stayed in the car with the kids (hooray!) to see if by any miracle they had any of the cheap Huggie tubs left. I had one $.50 coupon with me. I got back there and not only did they have A single tub left but a magical Coupon Fairy had left another few PLUS a Target coupon for $1 off the refill pack. In Case You Hadn't Noticed

I'm sure you've clued into the fact that I basically am running 2 blogs in one.

The first half of the month is my grocery shopping blog. This is where I use up a bunch of cash really quick in 2 weeks and brag about the great deals I snagged.
The 2nd blog happens after I'm not able to buy stuff anymore because I blew it way too fast and I'm out of money. This is when my addiction to post takes the form of recipes and, embarrassingly enough, recipe reviews.

It's the 15th and I'm out of money. Welcome recipes!

glazed carrots

Of course by "Glazed" you know I mean "Candied" and by "Candied" you know I mean "Real Good."

I ripped this recipe off from my all-time favorite cookbook: America's Test Kitchen. I have really liked everything I have ever made from this book. The recipes tend to be from scratch and more involved but they always turn out to be so good.

Glazed Carrots

serves 4
start to finish: 20 minutes, FAST!

1 pound carrots, peeled
1/2 cup chicken broth
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon butter, cut into 4 pieces
(the original recipe also calls for 2 teaspoons lemon juice but we DO NOT like this addition. feel free to try it but why mess up that good sweetness?)

Slice the carrots on the bias. I had 1/2 a bag of baby carrots in the fridge so that's what I used. Also, when I get a great deal on carrots I chop em up like this and freeze them. It makes this go super fast!

Combine the carrots, broth, 1 T of the sugar, and the salt in a large nonstick skillet. The lovely thing about this recipe is that I accidentally threw in all of the sugar at this point and it still turned out delicious. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and continue to cook covered, stirring occasionally until the carrots are almost tender, about 5 minutes.

Uncover, return to a boil and continue to cook until the liquid has reduced to about 2 T, about 2 minutes.

Stir in the butter and remaining 2 T of sugar. Continue to cook, stirring frequently until the carrots are completely tender and the glaze is lightly golden, about 3 minutes. At this point if you want to use the lemon juice, take it off the heat and stir it in. Season with pepper to taste.

These are so yummy! Sam, my 2 year old, does not like cooked carrots ("I don't like it") but he will eat these. They're still not his favorite, but he eats them. That's saying something.

Shoot

I hate to report this, but this peanut butter ice cream topping I told you about last night is DELICIOUS. I was afraid it might be. There is absolutely nothing nutritionally redeemable about this one. It is awful. Awful delicious! As if the topping wasn't bad enough for you, you put it over ice cream. Mmmm.

Oh, FYI, I halved the recipe and it still made a lot. Also, I used crunchy peanut butter and LOVED it.

I used the $3/5 coupon found in certain Associated Foods ads (maceys, fresh market, ect).

If you want an even better deal, buy 10 Oatmeal. A movie ticket voucher will print! So for $4 you get 10 boxes of oatmeal and a movie ticket! Nice! (the cereal won't do it though. darn.)

If you buy the oatmeal, try these printables. They'll get you an even better deal!
