Case lot sales are a good opportunity to stock up on basics that tend to not go on sale or have coupons. The stores have some items that are priced great, but be careful! Lots of stuff is cheaper at Sams Club/Costco or Walmart. The stores are counting on you to just walk in and throw a BUNCH of food in your cart. Just remember: buying in bulk doesn't mean you're getting a good deal. Will I be buying stuff at the caselots at Smiths and Maceys? Yes siree Bob, but you better believe that I've done some good researchin' first.
Research:
I pulled up the Grocery Smarts lists (from pinchingyourpennies) on both Smiths and Maceys and compared items between them. Utahdealdiva has done that for us for 20 items. I've also used the Grocery Store Caselots Sales comparison chart that compares the caselot sales to Walmart, Sams, Costco and others.
I'm not telling you to spend hours researching, but take a little time to plan ahead! You'll save some cash.
What am I buying?
Maceys: dough enhancer, canned fruit and veggies, syrup, flour, maybe sugar
Smiths: mandarin oranges, maybe broth
There are definitely other good deals to be had but this is what I'm interested in based on what we eat and what we're low on.
FYI:
At Maceys you can buy items individually or by the case, but at Smiths you can only buy them at that price by the case. Last September I split some cases with my sisters so I didn't have to get the whole things.
Oh, and I just found out from that comparison spreadsheet that Sams and Costco have the best prices on yeast. I guess I've got 2 grocery items I buy from Sams now: yeast and butter ($1.50/lb).
I went to Smiths yesterday and they do have some case lot sale items that you can buy individually including the Skippy's Peanut butter and the chili which is nice because there are current coupons for those.
