June Budget Review

I'm not a regular grocery shopper. I buy stuff before I even need it, matching manufacturer coupons with store sales. This way I'm able to "shop" from my own pantry and pay a fraction of retail with items I use. No, we will not use all those fruit roll ups this month, but we will use them this year. When I make meals for us, I menu plan around what we already have on our shelves and in the freezer. There are occasional items I have to pay full price for, but they are the exception as I build up my food storage with stuff we actually use, all for less then I used to spend just to get us by every month. Want to learn how I do it? Check this out.

Retails: $613.79
Total Spent: $185.92
Percent Off: 70%

This month in addition to perishables like milk, I was able to stock up on diapers, wipes, evaporated milk, fruit snacks, cereal, baggies, cheese, bleach, dish soap, chips and snacks, teriyaki sauce, eggs, popsicles, salsa, mayo, strawberries (made jam), fajita beef, salad dressing, hand soap, vitamins, deodorant, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, rice, jello, artichoke hearts, shrimp, ketchup, marshmallows, bacon, frozen veggies, rice wine vinegar, canned tomatoes, chicken.

Rebate!

I got a $4.50 check in the mail yesterday from Rite Aid. Sweet. Since I take the money out of my budget when I spend it, it gets added back into the budget when I get the check.

too bad it wasn't just a little bit more...

Garlic Ginger Chicken: 2nds Please!

garlic_ginger_chicken_3
How did I not take a picture of dinner? Darn it.
This is BlogChef's. Delicious looking, eh?

I made this Garlic Ginger Chicken last night and it was super good. I gotta say that I am really liking BlogChef's recipes. She has got the Asian thing down. They are not all that complicated or super time consuming and everyone of them that I've tried has been really yummy.

Ease of Preparation: B+
  • Basically, cut up the chicken and let it marinate for a 1/2 hour in soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. While that's marinating, prep the rest of the ingredients. And keep your two year old from stepping on your 4 month old. Again.
  • This was less than 45 minutes from start to finish, and not really involved work

Taste: A-
  • Really good. Both Matt and bro-in-law Morgan gave it high marks for deliciousness. And they are Particular.

Overall: A-
  • I served it over rice, which it doesn't say to do, but to not do that seemed, well, wrong.
  • Also, it says it serves 2. I thought they were lying. They weren't. If you want leftovers or to serve more people, DOUBLE THE RECIPE.

Wow, Does She Have Nerve!

This is NOT a recipe, despite what the tag at the bottom of this post says. We just had these yummy guys for breakfast for the 3rd time this week after forgetting all about them for years and thought I'd share.

Nothing better than eggs and fry bread. Mmmm.

We call them
Egg Toast

Ingredients:
* 1 slice of sandwich bread per person, buttered on each side
* 1 egg per person

After buttering the bread, take a cup, turn it upsidedown, and use it like a cookie cutter in the middle of the slice, leaving you with an empty circle in your bread. Put both the pieces of bread on a greased skillet. Crack an egg in the middle and throw on some salt. Flip it and cook the egg to how you like it.

Target Wipes Comparison

vs.

Questionable Math Skills:

Target has a great store coupon for $3.50/both Huggies diapers and wipes (greater than 184 count). I went to Target today to do this deal and stood there in the baby aisle scratching my head for a very long time. I couldn't decide if the 184 count 3 pack was cheaper at $5.99 or the 504 count 7 pack at $11.99. I had to call my husband to help me do the math! Even after that I still wasn't sure I'd made the best deal.

I have been pathetically trying ever since to decide which is the better deal so I thought I'd share my conclusions with you. I'm sure you are all much, much smarter than I am and already know the answer. If that is the case you have 2 options:
  1. skip this entry and play a round of solitaire instead. WAY more fun.
  2. read it anyways and mock my ridiculous math skills. Would you know that I've tutored math? Yikes. Poor kids.
First, let's divide that $3.50/wipes and diapers Target coupon in half. Let's say that we're taking $1.75 off the diapers and $1.75 off the wipes. And let's just forget about the diapers for now, but just know that when you use the $3 printable diaper coupon in addition (see post below) they end up being $4.24 for a jumbo pack! That's 15.7 cents a diaper for a size 4. Costco is 20.8 for Huggies and 21.3 for Kirkland. FYI: you have to get a jumbo pack at less than $5.60 to beat Costco's price. Do-able. But we are not talking diapers. We're talking WIPES.

Also, there is a $2 coupon here that is good for $2 off Huggies wipes greater than 320 count.

Here's the math:

Huggies 3 pack, 184 count, reg. $5.99
- take away the $1.75
- $4.24
- 2.3 cents each wipe

Huggies 7 pack, 504 count, reg. $11.99
- take away the $1.75
- take away the $2 coupon
- $8.24
- 1.6 cents each wipe

Hooray! I made the right choice! I got the big box 7 pack!

Phew. What a relief.

Oh, and as of 5/20, both of these options are cheaper than Costco's Huggies wipes. The Huggies wipes are 2.4 cents each ($23.99 for 1000) and the Kirkland wipes are 2.1 each ($18.99 for 900). thanks pinchingyourpennies! While that doesn't seem very significant, it works out to be a difference of $8 for the Huggies compared to my brilliant choice at Target!

Since these are not sale prices, this deal at Target is good until your coupons expire. Good luck.

Kikkoman for $.44!

Target

I went out to Target today for the Huggies wipes/diaper deal. I have been doing ok with staying on top of wipes lately but things change so fast.

I know that this trip puts me over budget but what else is new? Isn't it nice to know that no matter how much some things change, I will always be over budget? There is comfort in small things like this. I'm all about you.

80% off at Smiths!

I LOVE Smiths. I had the greatest trip today at the Provo Smiths. They had just about everything I was looking for- no $.09 Bounty or FREE Wacky Macs- but everything else. Hooray! I wasn't able to get there Wed morning and I am so glad now I didn't fight the crazy couponer crowd.

Smiths has a deal going this whole week (ends Tues) where they are making any coupon less than a dollar worth $1, so a $.25 coupon is magically a $1 coupon. A $1 coupon is still $1. E-coupons are NOT rounding up.

I know this is a bunch of junk, but the poll date on those fruit snacks is over a year away. Sweet! Plus, there is good stuff in there too, if you can see it past the chips and pizza rolls: shredded cheese, baggies, dish soap, Light string cheese. I like that I bought the light version. Oh my gosh! I'm totally that lady at the convenience store, buying the nasty old hot dog, chips, donuts, candy, and the DIET cola. Because every calorie counts!

Really though, we like the Light Frigo better. It's delicious! Come on, you know me better then to think I would actually buy something because it's better for you.

LOVE this Recipe!

I made this Sesame Salad tonight and I got to say I love it! Can you say super easy? Matt wasn't here so I don't have an opinion from him though. Sorry!

There is 4 parts to this bad boy:
1. the salad dressing (this is by far the most complicated part with 8 items)
2. cooked, shredded chicken
3. cooked pasta
4. and then top it with cilantro and green onions

Ease of Preparation: A
  • This came together in under a 1/2 hour and would have been even faster if I had the chicken already cooked. I love the idea of BBQing a bunch of chicken, shredding it, and freezing it. If only I would DO it.
  • Not that the dressing was hard at all to make, and it was so yummy, but if you were trying to find a use for bottled Asian dressing this would be a good place for it.
  • I BBQed the chicken, just salting it beforehand, and shredded it when it was done. You could cook the chicken anyway you want though. Is it ok to mention here that thawing chicken in the microwave is NOT a good idea if you want chicken that doesn't have the texture of rubber? Super nasty. I totally didn't know this for many, many years of gross chicken. How? I do not know.
  • I didn't have cilantro but I'm sure that would add to the deliciousness factor. (I cannot believe that "deliciousness" didn't earn me a misspelled red squiggly line. Is that a word? Wow.)
  • I didn't mix it all together in a serving dish but instead did it on our plates. I knew that there was no way we were eating all that food and didn't want the pasta to get soggy overnight. But maybe it would have just made all the flavors better as the chicken and pasta absorbed the dressing? Where's Alton Brown when we need him?

Taste: A-
  • This salad is really good. I'm only giving it an A- because it could have used something else... I'm not sure what... Maybe something crunchy, like slivered almonds or raw Top Ramen noodles like in that cabbage salad? Not sure.

Overall: A-
  • This would make an awesome meal to take to a neighbor: fast, easy, super good, and one container.

Oh and if you're looking for a place to refill your sesame seed container after putting 1/4 cup into the dressing, I filled mine for $.43 at Winco a few weeks back. I guess I'll be visiting there again sometime soon to do it again.

Hooray! A menu! It's a miracle after so long of a break. It has been a very busy month, not that it's an excuse. Things are back to normal so hopefully I'll get back on top of things again, or as on top of things as I ever am. Matt's just praying I'll get that darn laundry put away. Why is that so difficult? I'm so mad at Target. Well, I guess I'm more mad at myself. But I'm still not very happy with that place. Target is not close to me and I drove all the way out there after calling to see if they had the diapers and wipes for the killer Huggies deal (post #17). They did. Then.
